Transformative Justice
Healing through justice: TRANSFORMing the way we approach conflict and accountability.
Mission
TRANSFORM’s mission is to educate and build capacity in Tennessee about transformative justice as a response to and prevention of collective harm. We provide support for individuals and groups to practice the necessary skills to respond to harm and/or violence.
Origin Story:
In 2020, in collaboration with the Official Black Lives Matter Memphis Chapter, we hosted Tennessee’s first statewide Transformative Justice 101 intensive training that disability justice activist and transformative justice facilitator, Mia Mingus, led. The intensive, offered to those connected to grassroots social justice organizations in and around Tennessee, introduced core transformative justice principles and made explicit the connections to reproductive justice and abolition. In 2021, we offered a second intensive training, focusing on activists and organizers physically based in Tennessee. After this intensive, we launched a three-year cohort to train community members based in Memphis or Nashville to become transformative justice process facilitators as a first step to building out a statewide transformative justice collective, now known as TRANSFORM.
